If you are a follower of Christ, chances are there have been times you wished Jesus were physically here. That way you could ask him questions and see what exactly he wants you to do in any number of situations or scenarios.
Yet Jesus tells us this in John 16:5-7,
But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
So here is the question that we must ask; how is it better for Jesus to leave?
If Jesus was still here, we could ask him directly what we should do and how we should approach certain situations. What would be better than that?
And that sounds hard to beat, until we remember that there are over 7 billion people in the world. Which means if Jesus was still physically here, the chances of us actually getting to sit down and talk to him are 0%. That doesn’t sound very helpful.
Instead, Jesus is saying that he will send us the Holy Spirit to be a helper to us. To help guide and direct us in our lives. The New Testament shows us many of the things the Holy Spirit does, but here are four really important ones. Four reasons why it was good for Jesus to leave.
1) The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin (John 16:8)
The Spirit helps believers become more like Jesus. Jesus was perfect in word, deed, and in love for others. The Spirit convicts believers of the things in our lives that separate us from God in order for us to have a stronger relationship with God, and for us to be more like Jesus in our everyday lives.
2) The Holy Spirit reveals the things of God to us (1 Corinthians 2)
The Spirit helps us better understand God’s Word to us. He also helps guide and lead us, prompting us to speak to that person, pursue a certain project, or teaching us how to be generous.
3) The Holy Spirit indwells all believers of Jesus (John 14, among others)
The Holy Spirit is a free gift that God gives all believers when they put their trust and hope in Jesus. There is nothing we can do to earn it, and there is nothing we can do for the Spirit to be taken away. The Spirit is God’s gift to us to help guide and direct our lives if will submit our lives to Him.
4) The Holy Spirit gives us direct access to God (Ephesians 2)
The Holy Spirit makes it possible for us to have a direct relationship with God. Before Jesus came, you had to go to a priest or to the Temple in Jerusalem; you had to have a mediator go to God on your behalf.
Because of Jesus and what he did for us, the Holy Spirit now gives us the ability to speak with, pray to, and have a direct connection to God.
We get all of these things because Jesus left and sent us the Holy Spirit. This is why it was better for him to leave, so that everyone who follows him can have a direct relationship with God, not just those that were physically close to him.
This is why it was better for Jesus to leave, so that everyone could worship God in Spirit and in truth (John 4:23), no matter where they live, what they do, or who they are.
