Everyone loves a good story. Our favorite movies tell good stories. Many of our favorite memories create good stories to tell.
We often judge the fullness of someone’s life based on the stories in their life. Maybe they fought in a war, took a risk to chase a dream and achieved it, have memories to share of things they did with their spouse and family.
These are the things we share at funerals. We share stories of experiences we had with him or her.
We all want to be a part of a good story.
If you are a Christian, chances are you would love to not only create lasting memories throughout life, but to also be a part of seeing God do incredible things. To be able to look back on different parts of your life and be able to say “I remember when God did…”
Who wouldn’t want to be a part of seeing God radically change people’s lives, or to be a part of something so much bigger than yourself, where you saw God’s faithfulness in ways you had never seen before?
Everybody wants to see something like that, but the reality is creating these “God stories” don’t just happen. They aren’t accidents. They are almost always intentional.
How do you create God stories? You decide to step out in faith, where the only possible way the outcome will be successful in any way is if God shows up.
Now this doesn’t mean quitting our job on a whim to be some sort of missionary who is “living on faith” where you end up sleeping on friends couches because you have no job and no plan. Being unwise is not being faithful, it’s just being unwise.
But we are beginning a journey of starting New City Church where I believe we are going to be able to witness a lot of truly amazing God stories. Where we stepped out in faith and saw God do things only he can do.
And I say we because that’s what the local church is, a local body of believers. This isn’t my thing, it’s our thing. Yes I am excited about what we are doing, and yes we want and need people to join with us.
But above all that, I know that there are certain experiences and God stories that only happen in the very beginning when you have no idea how things will turn out. Of seeing the first few people who God transforms through the people of New City, of seeing God provide the necessary funding to get off the ground, of seeing people sacrifice their time and their resources to create environments where people can meet Jesus.
I’m excited about the God stories everyone that is involved in the work of starting New City Church will get to experience. To think of the God stories we will have to share in 10, 20, or 30 years, where we asked God to be faithful, and he did more than we imagined, has me ready to get to work!
This is how to create God stories, by stepping out in faith to see what God does. And if you want create some God stories of your own, we would love to have you join us in this endeavor.
