The Best Minute: On racism, character, and knowledge

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Ross Douthat on the effects of racism in America:

“My baseline assumption is that in a country that enslaved a population for 250 years and subjugated them for another century, it would be *very* unlikely if some version of systemic disadvantage did not persist.”

II. Abigail Van Buren on character:

“The best index to a person's character is (a) how he treats people who can't do him any good, and (b) how he treats people who can't fight back.”

2 IDEAS FROM ME

I. Busyness is a choice

II. When it comes to following Jesus, more information about the Bible, God, spiritual wisdom, etc. is often not as important as living out what you already know to be true. We already know we should extend forgiveness to people or that we should feel from sexual sin. The question is whether or not we are striving towards these things already or if we thinking simply knowing more information will make it easier to do (it won’t).

Living what you know to be true is the best way to become more like Jesus. Knowledge is good, knowledge put into practice is better.

1 RANDOM FACT

The cracking sound your joints make is the sound of gases being released.

When joints are stretched, the pockets of gas that get trapped between them are released. When these bubbles of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide escape, they might make a popping or cracking noise. Whether or not intentional joint cracking is bad for your health is a debate for another day.
