If relying on motivation is your primary driver, you will never reach your goal(s). It’s great at getting you started, but it can’t get you to the finish line. Motivation comes and goes and often wanes over time.
You were motivated to eat better, but comfort eating is hard to break
You were motivated to read more, but scrolling social media is so much easier
You were motivated to learn code, but you’re overwhelmed by how much you still have to learn
Remember: nearly everything takes longer than you think. Typically, if someone makes something look easy, it’s not. They themselves spent a lot of hours on it. The best thing to do once you become motivated to take action is to determine what small and doable practices you will implement to help you achieve your goal. Then, it is your habits, not your motivation, that will carry you.
If you want to get in shape but don’t currently workout, a small and doable practice is not going to the gym 5 times a week. But it might be doing three 15-minute workouts from home a week.
If you want to cook more dinners at home, a small and doable practice is not to go from eating out 5 times a week to only once a week. But it might be meal planning two basic dinners you will make each week.
Make sure your practices are small and doable. If you stick to them, it will be easy for you to go from two to three times a week, and then more.
Remember: Motivation to start. Habits to finish.
