The Best Minute: Doing less, when to conform, and persistence

1 IDEA FROM ME

Sometimes the most productive thing to do is to do less. Then you can focus on the things that really matter.

  • Donate what you no longer use; fewer things will have to be organized

  • Check your email less; you’ll send (and receive) fewer emails

  • Downsize from unneeded space; you’ll have less to clean

Are all your problems ones that need to be solved, or do some need to be taken away altogether? When you cut away unnecessary things to do, you can focus more on the things that matter.

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Thomas Jefferson on when to conform and when to not:

“On matters of style, swim with the current; on matters of principle, stand like a rock.”

———————————

II. Calvin Coolidge on persistence:

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

1 INTERESTING FACT

It has been said that water spirals down plug holes in different directions depending on which hemisphere you are in.

This is a myth, based on the effects of Coriolis, which refers to when the rotating earth causes the winds to deflect to the right in the northern hemisphere and the left south of the equator. The effect Coriolis has on water going down sinks is minimal. The truth is that water tends to flow down the plug-hole in the direction it is introduced into a sink.
