The Best Minute: On the right people, being open-minded, and moving forward

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Simon Sinek on attracting the type right people:

“Great companies don’t hire skilled people and motivate them, they hire already motivated people and inspire them.”

———————————

II. GK Chesterson on why open-mindedness in and of itself is not a virtue:

“Merely having an open mind is nothing. The object of opening the mind, as of opening the mouth, is to shut it again on something solid.”

2 IDEAS FROM ME

I. You don’t need to “move on” from significant pain, loss, or suffering in your life. “Moving on” suggest you can forget about it and no longer let it affect you. This is often unattainable and even unwanted.

Instead of “moving on” you can focus on moving forward. Move forward (however slowly) while remembering the loved one that was lost, or the lesson that was learned, or the experience that changed you.

Don’t move on, move forward.

II. Three work-week disciplines that will dramatically improve your focus and productivity:

  • Go to bed at the same time

  • Get up at the same time

  • Plan out your next workday schedule at the end of your current workday

1 INTERESTING FACT

Paper money is not paper.

U.S. paper money is not paper at all: It’s 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen. When paper money began widely circulating in use in the 18th century, people sometimes repaired torn bills with a needle and thread.
