The Best Minute: Setting goals, courage, and making something great

1 IDEA FROM ME

Setting a goal without determining what habits you will create to achieve the goal will always lead to failure.

  • I’m going to learn a new language. But how?

  • I’m going to lose 20 pounds. But how?

  • I’m going to be a better friend. But how?

  • I’m going to read 15 books. But how?

New Year’s resolutions often fail because we pick a goal without thinking through how we are going to do it. Goals tell us nothing, it’s our daily and weekly habits that determine our results. Think about what you want to do, and then spend a lot more time determining how you are going to do it.

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Mary Anne Radmacher on what courage sometimes looks like:

“Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is a quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’”

———————————

II. World renown record producer Rick Rubin on how to create hit records (or anything great):

“If you need 10 of something, make 30. Then pick the best.”

1 INTERESTING FACT

Babies Have More Vertebrae (backbones in your spine) than adults.

All humans are born with 33 vertebrae and as you enter adulthood, you’ll end up with less. As we get older some of our vertebrae will fuse together to form the back of the pelvis and tailbone. This is one reason why infants are wobbly and can’t sit up; their spinal vertebrae have not grown together to provide that extra stability yet.

1 QUESTION TO LEAVE YOU WITH

Instead of asking, “Will I succeed?” ask yourself, “What should I attempt?”
