The Best Minute: On achieving big things, why you should read, and 10 minutes a day

2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Elon Musk on how to achieve big things:

"The first step is to establish that something is possible; then probability will occur."

II. Patrick Collison on the importance of reading:

“You could try to pound your head against the wall and think of original ideas or you can cheat by reading them in books.”

2 IDEAS FROM ME

I. Don’t underestimate the power of 10 minutes a day. This can turn what seems overwhelming to complete in a year. In only 10 minutes a day for one year you could:

  • Learn how to play an instrument

  • Read the entire Bible (if you're willing to go 12 minutes a day)

  • Learn how to code

  • Become passable in another language

10 minutes a day can turn improbable into a reality when you focus on small and consistent progress over an idea that seems too big to accomplish.

II. Give yourself one year before you quit.

Instead of focusing on how much you can achieve, accomplish, or how much progress you are making, give yourself a year. Whenever we try something new, it only takes about two months (or less) to become discouraged about how far we still have to go. Instead of focusing on how far away you are from your goal, commit yourself to it for one year regardless of progress made.

If you can make it a year, you’ll likely keep going. And if you keep going, you’ll eventually make more progress than you thought possible when you began.

1 INTERESTING FACT

Lego has an underground vault with every set ever made.

The vault is in Denmark where the company headquarters is located and is closed to the public because of the value of what is in the vault. The vault is aptly named Memory Lane.
