⏱ The Best Minute: Trying harder or something different, tough decisions, and how to get stuff done

💡 1 IDEA FROM ME

Do you need to try something different or try harder? Getting this right can make all the difference in the world.

  • Is your workout plan not leading to results because you aren’t following the plan (i.e. you’re not exercising as much as you said you would), or because it’s not a good plan (i.e. you are following your workout plan and not seeing results)?

  • Do you spend too much time on email because you aren’t following the plan (i.e. you’re checking it outside of the times you designated to check it), or because it’s not a good plan (i.e. you planned to check it too many times during the day and need to reduce it)?

  • Do you struggle to focus at work because you aren’t following the plan (i.e. you schedule out your workday each day, but then don’t follow the schedule), or because your plan to focus is not a good plan (i.e. your plan is to try your best not to look at your phone, but you can’t resist it’s notifications)?

Sometimes, we need to put more effort into executing our plan, other times, we need a different plan. However, before you change your plan, you need to make sure you actually gave the current plan a real shot (in other words, you actually followed it and found it didn’t work).

Sometimes, our plan is good but too lofty (going from never exercising to going to the gym five days a week). In that case, we need to make our plan easier until we can build up the habit, and then we can make it bigger (going to the gym two days a week to start, bump it to three days after a month).

If you’re stuck, actually commit to your plan or change your plan. Just don’t give up quite yet.

💬 2 QUOTES FROM OTHERS

I. Justin Welsh on how to make a tough decision:

“Next time you have a tough choice to make in your business, ask yourself this simple question: "What choice would I make if I wasn't afraid?" Whatever it is, there's your answer.”

———————————

II. Leila Hormozi on how to get stuff done:

Aim for discipline, not motivation.

Motivation is just a feeling. Discipline is a habit. Discipline is the key to success. 99% of the success I have experienced has been directly correlated with my ability to act despite how I feel.

That’s why when people say, “How do you stay motivated?” The answer is, “I don’t.” I don’t rely on my feelings to get the job done. If anything, I can only count on my feelings to delay the job from getting done. Feelings are fleeting and often illogical. Relying on a sensation to accomplish anything will leave you inconsistent and ultimately deter you from success.

The key is to build your “Get stuff done when I feel like [crap]” muscle. Because that’s the truth, every ounce of your being will want to avoid or excuse… but you do it anyway. Things I tell myself to build the GSD muscle… “If you’re going to do it eventually, you may as well do it now.” “I don’t need to feel good to stick with the plan.” “If I do what’s hard now, the later will be easy.”

💯 1 Resource I Recommend

Bible Project

The Bible project produces a podcast (I listen to it every week), videos, graphics, and various other resources about the Bible, its themes, history, and how to understand it. No matter your experience or understanding of the Bible, these resources are intellectually stimulating and often eye-opening. I’ve been a fan of the Bible Project for years and would highly recommend the content they produce.

🤯 1 INTERESTING FACT

Spiral staircases in medieval castles run clockwise. This is because all medieval knights had to be right-handed (or if left-handed, had to train to fight right-handed and hide their left-handedness).

When the intruding army would climb the stairs, they would not be able to use their right hand to grab the rail, which was also holding the sword, because the rail was on their left-hand side when going up.

🤔 1 QUESTION TO LEAVE YOU WITH

What current habits are making it harder for me to make progress?
